Trail Overview

Trail 1 FR 420-1 is a scenic, entry-level route perfect for beginners, overland enthusiasts, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles seeking sweeping ridge-line views of the Cherokee National Forest. Spanning approximately 8.6 miles, this trail begins at the State Line Campground at the end of River Road, starting on a narrow, single-track asphalt section for the first mile before transitioning to a well-maintained gravel surface. As you climb from a minimum elevation of 2,060 feet up to a peak of 3,337 feet, the trail winds past prominent peaks like Tipton Knob and Rocky Knob, offering stunning layers of mountain vistas and valleys below. While the route is rated a mild 2 out of 10 in technical difficulty, drivers must remain vigilant due to several narrow stretches featuring steep, unguarded drop-offs. Any high-clearance vehicle, SxS, or stock four-wheel-drive SUV can comfortably navigate the terrain, though caution is recommended where the road shoulder falls away sharply. Autumn and winter represent the prime seasons to traverse this route when the falling foliage fully opens up the panoramic views. Nearby attractions include the spectacular Bald River Falls and a local trout hatchery along River Road, making the adjacent, basic State Line Campground an excellent base camp despite its lack of electricity or sewage hookups.

Picturesque trail from the NC border to Murphy. Plenty of elevation changes, took a couple of hours. Combine this with FR126 Waucheesi Bald trail in TN for a fun day out
