There’s a closed gate once you make your way up the trail a bit. Very icy right now.

Kept it in 2wd the whole time. Any car could drive on this. Freshly layed gravel. Basically a regular gravel road. Beautiful views.

Very basic trail. More of a mountain road really. Very nice view at the “Pleasant Garden” turnoff area. I wanted to journey down a side trail I found, but the gate was closed. Passed a couple people there just visiting for the drive and views I suppose. Definitely do not need 4WD for this. I also went down the trail on the other side of 197. Trail 5583. Short and ends at a gate on one side and a trail that leads to a private drive so I turned around.

Road was in great condition yesterday despite the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene in the area. Road was easily passable with a 2WD vehicle, there was actually a Buick up at the overlook when I arrived. The only reason I gave it a “2” was because it’s not two vehicles wide as stated on a “1”. I entered from the eastern point, the gate was open despite a local I met on the trail thinking it was closed. I believe they only close it during snow events. Be careful of downed trees, they have been cleared but most areas are only one vehicle wide and could easily snag your vehicle if you got a little wide on some of the turns. I was going to camp at the overlook but there was too much broken glass and trash around the designated fire rings to be comfortable with my pup hanging around there. Sunset was beautiful as everyone has described.

Easily passable with 2wd. Do not recommend camping at the Unaka campground at the overlook. Multiple people drove into campsite at 0100 almost hitting gear and truck. Views are great.
