Trail Overview

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a series of scenic gravel roads in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. It's located west of Nags Head in the North Carolina Outer Banks. The Refuge offers amazing scenery and views of the local wildlife. One can expect to see alligators, black bears, red wolves, and bald eagles. Phelps Lake is in the refuge and offers fantastic water views!

Difficulty

The Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge trail system is basic and can be driven by most passenger vehicles. During inclement weather, the trails can become more difficult to negotiate and may require 4WD during these times.

Nice wide open dirt roads that mostly run along a canal. I took New Lake Rd here from 94. It cut across a corn field and then through some wooded areas. Very cool ride on the dual sport.

Nice easy, peaceful drive. The road is in very good condition. Along the trail we saw wild turkeys, deer, black bear twice, turtles and a heron. However, we only caught a peek of Phelps Lake once.
