Trail Overview

The Carova 4x4 Beach is the northernmost portion of NC-12, which runs along North Carolina's Outer Banks. The pavement ends in the town of Corolla, at which point a 4WD vehicle is mandatory to make the beach drive. Currituck County has an ordinance that makes airing down your vehicle's tires to a maximum of 20PSI mandatory to go onto the beach. After making it onto the beach, you'll proceed north. The amount of beach varies wildly depending on the tide, and many drivers don't conform to the normal rules of the road. The speed limit is 15 MPH when near pedestrians. You'll see several species of birds, and of course, the Outer Banks are famous for their wild horses. Local laws require you to remain at least 50 feet from the horses and not to feed or otherwise disturb them. These laws are strictly enforced, and the locals will record and report violators. NC-12 ends at the Virginia Line and is gated off to prevent drivers from entering Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. Several points along the dune line allow drivers to get off the beach and head onto the back dirt roads of Carova. If leaving the beach, be mindful of property lines and horses. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, a county-issued permit is required to park on the beach. It is not required to drive on it.

A very awesome beach drive from Corolla, NC to the Virginia boarder. We lucked out and saw some wild horses. Conditions of the trail varied from very loose sand to hard packed. Definitely need to air down and use the 4wd. If you get stuck you might make the local facebook page. There air up stations in Currituck Heritage Park near the Light House.

Blue skies! Windy day so sand was EVERYWHERE! But an experience nonetheless. Drive at your own pace but be mindful and share the space as other 4x4’s are driving around you. Air down for sure!

Please bring at least a 4x4 vehicle and/or a set of MAXTRAX and please lower the pressure on your tires as the sand is quite soft in lots of spots, specially at the main entrance.

Pretty narrow from the last time we drove it, however it was fairly easy to maneuver. We could not get but a little piece past the house on the beach.

Sand packed down from rain all week, easy especially if you follow the train of vehicles. Saw wild horses in two spots.

Beautiful trail conditions with the sand somewhat packed after a good rain the past day. There are few vehicles passing each other making it enjoyable to take in the beautiful views, weather, and beach.
