Trail Overview
Locust Thorn Ridge is a highly technical dirt trail that demands careful vehicle placement and consistent attention from start to finish. The route features multiple off-camber sections, deep ruts, deep off-camber ruts, and numerous mud holes, some of which have loose bottoms that can make traction unpredictable. The trail is also extremely tight and overgrown, with limited overhead clearance in places. Full-size trucks and SUVs should expect significant brush contact, and pinstriping is essentially unavoidable. Turnaround opportunities are very limited, and the few that do exist are extremely tight, making it important to commit only if your vehicle and experience level are appropriate for the trail. A downed tree currently obstructs the route farther in, though the trail continues beyond it. Past that point, the terrain remains difficult, including off-camber ruts approaching 2 feet deep. High-clearance 4WD is required, and locking differentials are strongly recommended. Overall, this is a slow, demanding trail best suited for experienced drivers in properly equipped vehicles.
Difficulty
Locust Thorn Ridge is rated a 5 due to its sustained combination of deep ruts, off-camber terrain, mud holes, loose surfaces, and obstacles approaching 2 feet in depth. The trail repeatedly requires careful line selection and traction management, especially where deep ruts and side slopes occur together. The narrow, overgrown corridor and low overhead clearance further reduce maneuvering room, while the lack of practical turnaround locations increases the commitment level once the trail is underway. Some mud holes have loose bottoms, and the deeper off-camber ruts can significantly challenge clearance and stability. High-clearance 4WD is required, and locking differentials are recommended to maintain traction through the more difficult sections. The sustained terrain aligns with a Level 5 trail where obstacles up to approximately 2 feet and significant erosion, ruts, and traction challenges are present.
