Trail Overview
Goose Pond Road is a fun coastal trail that branches off Royal Oak near the local gun club. The trail surface consists of a mixture of loose sand and hard-packed sand, providing users with a more traditional coastal North Carolina off-road experience. During periods of dry weather, the trail is relatively easy to navigate and should be suitable for most AWD vehicles with reasonable ground clearance. Conditions can change significantly following periods of wet weather, however. Several mud holes along the route can become deep and potentially impassable for lower-clearance or less capable vehicles. After heavy rain, larger high-clearance 4WD vehicles may be necessary, and users should travel with appropriate recovery equipment. Drivers should evaluate current conditions carefully, as Goose Pond Road can become considerably more challenging when wet.
Difficulty
Recent weather conditions should be considered, as deep mudholes can develop after rain. All-wheel drive is required at a minimum, while high-clearance four-wheel drive and recovery gear are recommended following rainfall.
