Trail Overview

Willie White is 5.3 miles long and is one of the harder ATV trails in the area, as it is rockier, narrower, and more exposed in spots, with a few small rock ledges. The northern entrance starts at a large parking area and goes through a gate. The trail is immediately a bit narrow and elevated on a shelf above a meadow and ravine, slightly off-camber. There are a couple embedded small rock ledges within the trail that are diagonal layers of rock, and the trail has lots of loose rock and roots that make it more technical. It does a couple of big hairpin turns, one at an intersection with a nonmotorized trail, then keeps climbing on a surface of packed down loose rocks, on a shelf trail through the forest. Some parts are steeper and looser, and others are more gradual through easy meadows. At times it is wider, but other times it is more narrow and off-camber as it traverses the hillsides. After passing the northern intersection with 5008, it keeps climbing on the shelf trail, getting steeper as you keep going south, until it reaches a high point of over 9,300 feet in elevation. After the second intersection with 5008, the trail steeply descends to its southern end for the last mile. This section of the trail has lots of roots and bigger chunkier loose rocks that make it more technical. The last section of the descent is a narrower shelf with several small rock ledges and mild exposure. It feels narrow as you ride along some embedded rock walls in the side of the hill. It ends on FS 5009 Road. There were several freshly downed logs on the trail in early season from a recent wind storm, but the trail looks highly maintained, and it is likely that the logs will get cut for the season.

Difficulty

This is a moderate ATV trail due to several narrow, rutted, and off-camber sections, a consistently rocky surface, and several small rock ledges. It is not overly difficult, but is more suited to riders with more experience, and is in general, a bumpier, slower ride over many loose rocks.
