Sawmill Greenie

Sawmill Greenie is a scenic 9.3-mile point-to-point trail starting in Red River, New Mexico, that offers offroaders an alternative, winding route up to the high-altitude panoramic views of Greenie Peak. Perfect for moderately equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs, this route begins as a wide, two-lane gravel road that transitions into a more challenging dirt track as it climbs. Along the way, the trail winds through lush forest terrain and climbs from an elevation of 8,642 feet up to a peak altitude of 11,224 feet, offering spectacular views of the surrounding Carson National Forest. While much of the route is straightforward, drivers will encounter two steep, badly washed-out, and heavily rutted sections near the midpoint that require careful tire placement and adequate ground clearance. Because of these rutted sections, standard low-clearance SUVs are not recommended, but high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and OHVs will find the obstacles manageable. Multiple dispersed camping spots are scattered along the lower portion of the trail, providing excellent basecamp options for those looking to spend a few days exploring the area's extensive trail network. At the summit of Greenie Peak, visitors are treated to vast views extending to Eagle Nest Lake to the south, Valle Vidal to the east, Wheeler Peak to the southwest, and Taos to the west. The town of Red River is highly OHV-friendly, allowing off-highway vehicles on all side streets, though they are prohibited on the main state highway, making it easy to access the trailhead directly from town.
