Elk Standoff is a scenic 29-mile dirt route near Monument Peak, New Mexico, ideal for overlanders seeking high-desert vistas and a glimpse into local history. Winding through the rolling mountain landscape with a technical rating of 2, this well-maintained trail is accessible to most stock high-clearance vehicles under dry conditions. The route features a gradual elevation climb, starting at around 6,260 feet and reaching a peak of 7,221 feet, accumulating roughly 2,470 feet of total elevation gain. The primary dirt surface is generally smooth and easy to navigate, though travelers should expect a few sections with small rock gardens and minor ruts leftover. Near the end of the route, offroaders can explore several abandoned historical structures, including an iconic old building that resembles a defunct general store.
