Trail Overview
952 is an easy ATV trail that goes through the Gila National Forest for over 4 miles near Apache Creek, New Mexico. It’s mostly a dirt two-track that is pretty wide, meandering through a dry and sparse ponderosa forest, through wide open grassy glades. The trail goes through several cattle gates and often dips into a little ravine with a bit of sand and loose rock, sometimes lined by a taller dirt wall. Other times, the trail parallels the ravine. Expect some deeper ruts and uneven ground when the trail crosses the ravine several times, as it can become a bit washed out. There were a couple of really big logs down that ATVs will likely need to cut in order to get through. The trail surface has minor embedded flat rock and loose rock at times, with small stair steps less than a foot tall.
Difficulty
The majority of this trail is easy and ideal for newer riders. It is mostly a mix of wide sandy washes and ravines at the base of the rolling hills, plus a wide dirt two-track with minor rock. However, there was a large log down midway through the trail that will likely need to be cut in order for ATVs to pass through, and there is always potential for new log hazards in the forest.
