Trail Overview
ATV trail 954 is an interesting out-and-back spur off of #952 that goes through Pole Water Gap Canyon. Most of the trail is an easy two-track that curves through the dry and sparse ponderosa pine forest; however, it is pretty faint and a lightly trafficked route, requiring some good navigational skills. Expect some loose rock, uneven spots, shallow ruts, and ravine crossings that bottom out. There were a few small logs down that are passable. The trail goes through a wash that had a bit of swampy water, following the wash for a bit with chunky rocks. It exits the wash and parallels it in an area that had lots of downfall to the side of the trail. At times, the wash is within taller dirt walls, dug out deeper below the forest floor. At the north end, the trail runs into a couple of major washouts, and the trail peters out, as it looks like riders haven’t been able to go past here.
Difficulty
The majority of this trail is easy, with minor ruts, loose rock, and ravines. However, it ends at a couple of major washouts that don’t seem passable on the north end. This route is faint and primitive, requiring good navigational skills.
