Trail Overview

The Narrows is a pole line road that runs between Fernley Nevada, and Winnemucca Lake. Winnemucca Lake is a dry lake bed in northwest Nevada that features the oldest known petroglyphs in North America. It is quite remote once you get out of Fernley, cell service is spotty, and you may not see anyone for the whole trip. This is a great road to test out your vehicle setups as there is plenty of BLM land to camp on. Once you reach Winnemucca Lake there are old mining ruins you can explore even some deep sand to go play in. You can head back to Fernley on Highway 447 or out to the Black Rock to continue your adventure.

Difficulty

This is an unmaintained pole line road. After heavy rains, the trail can be impassable if it is still wet. There is a possibility of a tumbleweed drift blocking the road in a couple of places.

Multiple BLM squatters at the Fernley side of the trail, but other than driving thru their camps, I was completely alone on trail all the way to Nightingale and then some people in the distance occasionally from there to Nixon. Nothing a stock jeep couldn't handle.

Easy trail for the most part, had a great time with a group of 11. Saw some SxS groups by the Nightingale Mine.

Fernley side is rocky. Steep in parts but was easy with no worries.

Went South to North and stopped at the sand dunes close to the North end. Only saw two people on dirt bikes over 24 hours on this trail. I would probably not go on this when raining, since some crossings might get dicey. Also full size rigs likely to get pin strips, but Jeep was fine.

Not too bad at all aside for some steep-ish sandy sections at the very start but 4x4 handled fine. I turned back (in my 10k lb van rig) on a steep grade with lots of loose ping pong to soft ball size rocks with larger rock obstacles that my tires were struggling for traction and taking lots of engine power to negotiate.
