Trail Overview

Spencer Spur A is a rugged and lightly traveled two-track that climbs into the Toiyabe foothills, offering a more secluded alternative to the main canyon roads. This trail is a standout for wildlife enthusiasts because it sees so little motorized traffic; the odds of encountering Nevada’s iconic species are quite high. As you cruise along the rocky path, keep your binoculars ready for herds of Pronghorn Antelope, coyotes, and groups of wild burros. In the higher sections, you may even spot Mule Deer or Elk retreating into the timber. The environment is a classic high-desert mosaic of sagebrush and mountain scrub. You will likely flush Sage Grouse from the brush as you pass. The trail provides an intimate look at the rugged foothills, but the driving is slow and steady. The route terminates abruptly where the trail becomes heavily overgrown with trees, just behind a particularly steep, off-camber section. There are no suitable flat spots for dispersed camping along the route or at its end, making this best suited as a dedicated wildlife-scouting detour. There is no cell service on this spur. The surrounding hills block all signals from the valley. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

Rated a 3 primarily due to several deep wash crossings that require careful navigation and high clearance. The final section before the trail becomes overgrown is also notably steep and off-camber. The trail surface is consistently rocky.
