Trail Overview

South Wheeler Pass Road is an ideal, scenic route for beginner offroaders and families seeking a gentle introduction to Nevada’s desert landscape, offering stunning panoramic views of the Pahrump Valley and Wheeler Wash. Spanning approximately 7.6 miles, this trail begins at the intersection of Highway 160 at the south end of Pahrump at an elevation of about 3,000 feet and climbs steadily to a peak elevation of approximately 4,706 feet. The trail maintains an easy technical rating of 2 out of 10, characterized by a mostly level, wide, and hard-packed dirt surface that accommodates two vehicles side by side. Standard high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, stock SUVs, and SxSs will easily navigate this trail, which gains roughly 2,020 feet in elevation overall. Along the ridge, travelers are treated to outstanding vistas of the surrounding valley before descending briefly into South Wheeler Wash. While the majority of the trail is firm and predictable, drivers will encounter a brief sandy section when crossing the floor of South Wheeler Wash, which represents the primary obstacle on this straightforward route. Despite the overall easy terrain, keep a sharp eye out for local wildlife, as wild horses and desert tortoises are known to inhabit the area. There are no major technical challenges or extreme climbs, making it highly accessible throughout most of the year, though hot summer months demand carrying extra water and emergency supplies. Adventurers can easily pair this route with nearby trails in the Spring Mountains or explore the recreational options around Pahrump.
