Trail Overview

Rocky Gap is a difficult trail that traverses the Spring Mountain Range west of Las Vegas. Several challenging rocky washes make up the west side of the trail. Steep shelf ledges make up the east side. Winter snow will change this trail every year, making it almost impassable in winter. The elevation provides a refreshing summertime escape from the heat of the desert floor.

I have a TJ with 4” lift and 31” tires, difficult but not impossible in a few areas only. But these were very challenging, large boulders, waterfalls and uneven loose areas.

Beautiful trail. The Rainbow Mountain Wilderness area offers very scenic mountain view’s & overlooks. I started the trip from the west side off Lovell Canyon Road and finished at White Rock Willow Springs. The trip took two hours trail head to finish line. I did stop several times to take photos and appreciate the beauty of this trail. The trail is rated at a difficulty level 7, which is true for the rock garden section. This section was legit, so if you’re not experienced or have a stock rig, I suggest you go with a buddy. It’s helpful to have a spotter, high lift jack and tow strap just in case. This section was about a half mile long. The rest of the trail is pretty tame and more of a 3-4 difficulty level at best. There is no cell coverage anywhere on this trail so plan appropriately and most of all, have fun. 🤠

This is a beautiful drive!! We’re from Ohio and took a Vegas trip and wanted to get out of the strip. Rented a stock Sahara and found this trail off the scenic drive in the red rock national conservation park. Towards the end was the hardest section that went for maybe +50 yards of rocks. With a good spotter and wheel placement we made it through. Even the bypasses in this stretch were technical in this stock jeep. Will have some vid up on Mark and Melissa’s adventures on YouTube. Didn’t get any pics of the hard section, too busy trying not to bang up the rental lol.

Most of the trail is pretty mild. That rock garden section was fun though. I was in a stock JLU Rubicon. Didn’t need the lockers or anything, just slow crawl, pick your line, no problems. Super fun trail. Spectacular views. I can see how it’d be challenging in wet weather. Saw a few hikers, but no other vehicles.

Drive this solo in my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with zero trail issues. Came in through Lovell Canyon and exited through Red Rock. Got out a few times to pick my lines in the West side rock garden. That was a little challenging but fun as hell to navigate. My rock sliders helped me make some tight turns. Found a small patch of ice heading down the East side but nothing too sketchy. It’s a beautiful trail to run.

some rocks were moved but it was perfect conditions just a bit windy. the recent rains didn't erode the trail. it is still passable with a stock Rubicon on 33s. just choose your lines carefully

The only badge of honor trail in Nevada! Very fun trail! Doing this one again! Do not do this trail alone — you will need a spotter for the rock gardens located on the west side of the mtn. Only high clearance 4x4’s should attempt the west side. Stock vehicles with high clearance can easily do the east side top to bottom with great views - has tight switchbacks and some washouts. Most of the difficult rock gardens have bypasses - optional rock gardens are 5-7 rating. One of the rock gardens does not have a bypass, which is where the 5 rating comes from due to rock / ledge sizes — but if you pick your lines carefully is closer to a 4. Several off camber areas on both sides of mountain, most are mild to moderate (less than 20 degrees) — reached 30 degrees off camber while 22 down pitch in optional rte. Vehicles: Willy’s Gladiator with stock tires but a 3 1/2 “ lift and a Wrangler Rubicon 392 (std with XR pkg, 35” tires and 2 1/2” lift). Rock rails are a must; skid plates are a plus.

This is a fairly short trial with beautiful sceneries. The Rocky Gap name is fitting for it.

This is a very bumpy and rocky trail. A winch is not required though a lifted vehicle will get through far easier. I ran this with a 12 JKU with a 4" lift on 35's and I rubbed my sliders, and drug my unders a bit more than I'd like. I've learned there are four washes that you can take which bypass and intersect the main trail, I took the first two and skipped the last two because my dogos were not happy with all of the bouncing around. This trail is rated is rated 7 here on OnX, 5-6 on Jeep Badge of Honor, and 5-6 on Trails Off-road (I do check multiple map sources before planning a route). The trail ratings vary slightly though as of last night, and in my opinion, the trail bypassing all washes is a 5, and if you choose to do all of the washes they themselves range between a 5-7. There were a few sections of the trail that were off camber and a little unnerving and a few rock climbs that had my heart going, but nothing too treacherous. This was a lot of fun to run in summer starting later in the day, the we

West half is in good shape. The rock garden is challenging but doable. The east side has a lot of runoff erosion that makes some of the switchback ledges a bit tight.

Decent amount of snow, up to 6 inches near the highest elevations. The snow turns to ice as soon as you drive over it so if you’ve never been snow wheeling it may not be the best trail to start on. Had to turn around about 3/4 of the way coming from the west side due to weather and ice patches on sketchy parts of the road. Using chains, you could probably make it through no problem.
