Trail Overview

Mormon Well is a stock-friendly trail that traverses the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. You will cross a well-maintained dirt road that rises in elevation from the desert floor to more than 6,000 feet in elevation. Along the way, you will see Joshua forests give way to groves of pine trees. Picnic and camping areas can be found at the trail's midway point. Enjoy the change of scenery and watch for wildlife. Big horn sheep, elk, and wild burros are commonly seen in the area. Winter does bring snow to the area, so check the weather before any travel.

This is a very easy trail. Pretty straightforward. I did air down just to be safe with sharp rocks.

With the high winds like today (5-17-26) expect a lot of dust. But the picnic area at the top had only a slight breeze and pleasant. Area was clean.

Very beautiful trip, long but beautiful. I spent the night at the campsite at the summit. Only a few other vehicles at camp and none on the trail. Desolate but amazing. There were a few spots that were only 5-7 miles an hour for long stretches, it was very rocky with a few widow maker rocks sticking out.

Well maintained road but a bit rockier than Alamo Rd. Most stock 4x4’s can make the trip.

Super easy drive in and out of the campground! A couple fun splashes on the road and absolutely no snow to worry about. You can definitely make it in 2WD, but having a little extra clearance will make the ride smoother. There are two rough sections where low-clearance cars could take a hit underneath, but nothing too crazy—overall a fun and simple access road!

Well you CAN take a crossover all the way through to the 93, but maybe you shouldn’t. The road up corn creek is ok with some sections you can do about 25 on, but once you pass the campground it gets narrower and there are a lot of rocks that could threaten a low vehicle. We probably would have popped a tire if I was running stock, but the cooper road+trails on 17” wheels did a good job. I would go back to the desert pass campground again, but I’d take the corn creek way home again instead of finishing the trail through to the 93. I think you could make it in a 2wd vehicle no problem, but ground clearance and big tires are a must.

It was raining a bit on the way to the start. A decent sized puddle before the midpoint and a handful of small ones along the way. Only one other person seen at the campsite but didn’t see them the rest of the way out to the 93. Suggest airing down for comfort, nothing technical but be mindful of some deeper ruts near the last 3rd.

Did this trip in my stock 2018 F-150 FX4. I believe most vehicles would be able to handle it if you go slow. Started coming off the US 95. The trail was easy to access and follow. There was rain a few days prior so there was a lot of areas that had some wash out. A few mud puddles as well. we took the whole route over the mountain and out to US 93. The first part was valley with mountain views which was beautiful if you like desert. As we climbed we got to a canyon that went through the mountains and was absolutely worth the drive. There is a camp area up near the peak. Overall the ride was pretty easy going up. Coming down the back side towards the US 93 was definitely best described as washboard. Couldn't go much more than 5 mph without hurting our bodies. We saw a total of 6 other vehicles in the entire route so not over crowded at all. I would probably do it again and turn around after the peak to avoid the other side. It did open back up to valley but was also a Joshua tree graveyard and not worth it IMO

Big rain the night before we hit the trail. My new ‘25 Tacoma off road did just fine. Rain deteriorated the trail pretty bad in some spots. Had to flip into 4lo for a portion to get over some riverbed. Overall great trail. Went down gass peak trail and then continued on Mormon well for about an hour. Not much diversity in the trail other than washboard. Bumpy ride for sure. Nice caves along the way

As others have said, the 95 side of the trail is in better shape than the 93 side. I'd categorize this trail as a 3 due to the rougher conditions on last 10-15 miles (headed east)

All gates are open and road is passable by all high clearance. I traveled from west to east.
