Trail Overview

Martin Ranch Road is a pleasant and well-maintained access route that serves as a primary link between the expansive Antelope Valley floor and the technical trails of the high country. The road follows the winding path of Copenhagen Creek, providing a rare riparian landscape in this arid region. As you ascend, the typical sagebrush gives way to more varied terrain, eventually reaching a critical junction where the road splits: one direction leads into Ryegrass Canyon and the trailhead for the White Sage Trail, while the main route continues toward the private Martin Ranch. The drive is characterized by its exceptionally smooth, graded surface, clearly maintained to support the active ranch. As you work your way up the canyon, the landscape is a visual treat, featuring vertical rock formations and several natural caves tucked into the cliff sides. For those looking to settle in for the night, this corridor is home to several high-quality, level clearings that make for excellent dispersed camping spots. Expect zero cell service once you enter the canyon. The deep folds of Ryegrass Canyon create a total signal shadow. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

While the road is mostly wide and well-graded, there are a few narrow segments where passing oncoming traffic requires caution. Suitable for most high-clearance vehicles and SUVs. Under dry conditions, this route is accessible for standard crossover vehicles.

History

The name Copenhagen Creek is a lasting tribute to the diverse ethnic heritage of the early Nevada pioneers. In the mid-to-late 1800s, the Austin silver boom drew prospectors and ranchers from across the globe, including many from Scandinavia. These settlers founded "oasis" ranches like the Martin Ranch, utilizing the rare mountain springs to raise the livestock that fed the nearby mining camps. Ryegrass Canyon, which this road accesses, was likely named for the resilient native bunchgrasses that provided essential winter forage for the 20-mule teams that once dominated these valleys.
