Trail Overview
Loop Powerline Road offers intermediate offroaders a scenic and moderately challenging point-to-point drive along high-tension power lines, showcasing dramatic, panoramic views of Lake Mohave and the surrounding desert peaks. Spanning 9.9 miles, this route climbs from a low elevation of 1,390 feet to a maximum of 4,260 feet, accumulating over 3,580 feet of elevation gain along the way. The surface consists primarily of loose dirt and rocks on steep grades, which can challenge traction and require careful tire placement. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended, though capable SxSs and dirt bikes will also find the trail highly engaging.
Numerous blind switchbacks require drivers to maintain slow speeds and stay alert for oncoming traffic along the narrow, single-vehicle-wide road. Fortunately, the trail features multiple pull-outs to accommodate passing vehicles safely. Travelers should prepare for steep descents and ascents where maintaining momentum is key. Because of the exposed desert terrain near Searchlight, Nevada, the best time to explore this route is from late autumn through early spring when temperatures are comfortable, as summer heat can become extremely hazardous.
