Trail Overview

Horse Heaven Canyon is a primitive out-and-back trail that follows the canyon's natural drainage as it climbs steadily toward the towering Horse Heaven Mountain Summit. This is a quintessential "pioneer" track, characterized by its isolation and the raw, unmaintained beauty of the Great Basin wilderness. As you navigate the canyon floor, you are flanked by stunning, vertical rock formations that provide a dramatic backdrop to the dense forest of Pinyon Pine and Utah Juniper. The driving experience is high-intensity and technically demanding. Expect several severe washouts and sustained off-camber segments that will test your vehicle's articulation and your ability to choose a precise line. The trail has seen very little maintenance, resulting in narrow corridors where tall sagebrush and timber branches crowd the track. The canyon is a vibrant habitat for local wildlife; Mule Deer are frequently seen darting through the timber, and the trail is heavily marked with evidence of wild mustang activity. The motorized route terminates at a lush, overgrown thicket of trees and mountain mahogany, offering a peaceful meadow for those wishing to continue their exploration on foot toward the summit. An outstanding dispersed campsite with a panoramic view is located at the very beginning of the trail. A second, more secluded spot is available in a Pinon meadow near the motorized terminus, ideal for those planning to hike the remaining distance to the peak. Cell Service: Expect zero cell service for the duration of this trail. The high canyon walls and mountain ridges create a total signal dead zone. Download offline maps before entering the canyon.

Rated a 3 due to the combination of severe off-camber tilts and technical obstacles requiring high levels of suspension travel. Traction can be a challenge in the loose, eroded sections of the wash.
