Hidden Forest

Hidden Forest is an easy, scenic dirt road in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge that is perfect for beginners and drivers looking to access one of southern Nevada's premier hiking destinations. Spanning 3.7 miles, this route climbs steadily from an elevation of 4,495 feet to 5,859 feet, gaining 1,363 feet of elevation as it winds through a natural wash. The track is composed mainly of loose gravel, deep sand, and rocky sections, making a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or high-clearance SxS highly recommended to safely navigate the soft terrain. Drivers will enjoy stunning desert vistas and rugged canyon views as they ascend toward the Sheep Range, with the towering peaks providing a dramatic backdrop. At the end of the road, a large gravel parking lot serves as the trailhead for the famous hiking route to the historic Hidden Forest Cabin, which was built in 1931 during the Prohibition era. Because this road runs through an active wash, travelers should be prepared for potential water crossings, mud, and changing conditions, and it is crucial to avoid the area during bad weather due to severe flash flood hazards. While the trail is accessible year-round, spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for offroading, while summers can bring extreme desert heat.
