Trail Overview
Hafen Ranch Cut-Off leaves Hafen Ranch Road and travels deeper into BLM land over fine, loose dirt that can become more difficult when wet. Ruts near the beginning are only 2–3 inches deep, making this a relatively easy route with no significant obstacles. The trail provides scenic views of the surrounding mountains with numerous level campsites along the way. Starting around 0.7 miles in, several campsites offer level ground, fire rings, and additional privacy from clusters of trees.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 1 because of its relatively smooth terrain, shallow 2–3-inch ruts, and lack of significant technical obstacles. Under normal dry conditions, it provides an easy drive through the surrounding BLM land.
History
The BLM lands south of Pahrump lie along historic travel corridors used by Indigenous peoples for generations and later by Spanish explorers, miners, ranchers, and settlers crossing the Mojave Desert. Portions of the nearby Old Spanish Trail became an important 19th-century trade route connecting settlements in New Mexico with Southern California, leaving the region with a long history of desert travel and exploration.
