Trail Overview
Comet Mine Road is a scenic 10.5-mile mining road located in the Highland Range of Lincoln County, Nevada. The trail follows the eastern slopes of Highland Peak and provides access to some of the area's most significant historic mining sites, including the Pan American Mine and the Comet Mine. This route combines Nevada mining history, mountain scenery, and classic high-desert off-roading into a memorable half-day adventure. Beginning in the rugged foothills east of Highland Peak, Comet Mine Road climbs gradually through the Highland Range while traversing the remains of one of Lincoln County's historic mining districts. The road surface consists primarily of graded dirt with sections of loose rock, embedded stone, and occasional washouts that can become more pronounced following storms. The trail is generally suitable for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, UTVs, and adventure motorcycles. Drivers should expect narrow sections, rocky climbs, and occasional off-camber areas, but no extreme obstacles under normal conditions. Weather can quickly change trail conditions, particularly after heavy rain. The highlight of the route is the opportunity to explore the historic Pan American Mine and Comet Mine areas. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, these mines contributed to the rich mining heritage that helped shape Lincoln County. Remnants of mining activity can still be seen throughout the area, offering a glimpse into Nevada's boom-and-bust mining era. As the trail winds along the eastern side of Highland Peak, visitors are treated to expansive views of surrounding valleys, desert basins, and distant mountain ranges. The landscape is classic Great Basin terrain featuring pinyon pine, juniper, sagebrush, and seasonal wildflowers. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, desert cottontails, hawks, golden eagles, and other native species.
