Trail Overview
Color Rock Quarry is a scenic, beginner-friendly route perfect for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance SUVs, and SxSs looking to explore the vibrant, rugged landscapes of southern Nevada. Starting off Valley of Fire Highway, this 7.6-mile out-and-back trail winds south through a visually striking desert landscape, steadily climbing from 2,143 feet to a maximum elevation of 2,905 feet. The path leads adventurers into the spectacular geological buffer of the Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area, where dramatic sandstone cliffs and brilliant red rock formations dominate the horizon.
With a mild technical rating of 2, the primary surface consists of a well-maintained gravel and dirt road that presents minimal obstacles under dry conditions. Throughout the steady 858-foot elevation gain, offroaders can easily access primitive camping spots and discover trailheads for short hikes leading to historic petroglyphs. The route terminates near the historic Color Rock Quarry site, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding canyon walls and desert floor before backtracking. While accessible year-round, extreme summer heat makes autumn through spring the ideal season to traverse this trail safely.
