Trail Overview

Clipper Gap Canyon Loop is a lightly used, primitive trail that provides a rugged tour of the Toiyabe foothills. This route is defined by its isolation and its varied terrain, offering outstanding panoramic views of the high peaks to the east and the sprawling Reese River Valley to the west. As you work your way through the foothills, you’ll encounter massive sagebrush meadows and at least four large, distinct "wallows" right in the middle of the track—likely the work of the local wild burros that have flourished in this quiet corner of the range. The driving experience is technically demanding and physically "tight." The segment where this loop connects to the main Clipper Gap trail passes through a very dense and narrow forest of heavy brush. Paint damage is guaranteed in this section, as the vegetation is thick enough to require a handsaw or loppers for passage. Drivers should be prepared for multiple off-camber sections and deep wash crossings that require slow, deliberate navigation. The trail’s "reclaiming" nature means you are essentially forging a path through the brush, making this a true explorer's route for those who don't mind a few new pinstripes on their rig.

Difficulty

Rated a 3 due to the combination of deep wash crossings, sustained off-camber tilts, and extremely narrow overgrown sections. Precision driving is required to manage the steep entries into the washes without high-centering. This trail is overgrown and requires "bushwhacking" with your vehicle.
