Trail Overview
This easy, scenic spur trail along the forested shores of Hebgen Lake is perfect for recreational offroaders and SxSs seeking a quiet afternoon with panoramic ridge-line views of the water. Spanning just over 1.1 miles with minimal elevation change, this route branches off the main Whisky Bay trail near Horse Butte and Rainbow Point. It sits higher up on a ridge line than neighboring trails, offering stunning elevated vantage points but making direct water access more difficult. Four-wheel-drive vehicles and standard high-clearance rigs can easily navigate the mostly smooth, flat dirt surface, though the track narrows significantly in places.
Drivers should remain cautious of one or two tight, twisty turns through dense timber between the day-use spots, which makes pulling trailers highly inadvisable and poses a minor challenge for tall or oversized rigs, though standard full-size trucks will manage. The area features reliable cellular reception with two or more bars of LTE service, making it easy to stay connected. Visitors should check local postings, as toxic algae warnings are common in Hebgen Lake; avoid swimming or letting pets drink from areas with visible algae blooms. This peaceful day-use route provides an ideal spot to park, relax, and soak in the natural beauty of the Custer Gallatin National Forest.
