Trail Overview

Rainbow Point is an easy, family-friendly trail perfect for beginners, scenic cruisers, and those looking for a direct route between the campground and the shoreline of Hebgen Lake. This 2.7-mile trail features a flat, wide dirt surface with minimal elevation change, staying around 6,550 feet, making it accessible to virtually any vehicle including standard two-wheel-drive cars, four-wheel-drive rigs, and SxSs. Washboard sections are common due to heavy seasonal traffic, but there are no technical obstacles or rock crawling required along this route. Traveling through a scenic lodgepole pine forest, the trail crosses a main paved road at one point where drivers must stop and watch for oncoming traffic before proceeding. The trail serves as an excellent connector to the Rainbow Point Campground, which offers ample camping sites, a boat launch, and day-use picnic areas along the Grayling Arm of Hebgen Lake. Recreationists often use this path to access the lake for boating and fishing, though visitors should note local signs warning of toxic blue-green algae blooms and avoid swimming or allowing pets to drink the water when algae is present. Cell service is generally reliable here with two or more bars of LTE. Due to heavy snowfall in the West Yellowstone area, this dirt route is typically accessible from late spring through fall and serves as a winter recreation trail during the colder months.
