Trail Overview

This 38-mile route (County Road 556) is a beautiful adventure through some remote and rugged terrain! It is perfect for those looking for a quiet escape into nature, with the Thompson River as a scenic companion along the way. The opportunity for fishing, particularly for brown trout, is a major bonus for anglers. Traveling through both Thompson River State Park and Lolo National Forest, it follows a good portion of the Thompson River through forested mountains with several secondary roads close by. The combination of forested mountains and river access offers diverse natural landscapes to explore, whether you're hiking or just cruising along the road. The availability of developed camping areas also makes it an ideal spot for a multi-day trip. The caution about road conditions is important, especially after heavy weather and snow. Knowing the road can get quite muddy and rutted makes it clear that planning and having the right vehicle (4WD and chains in winter months) are essential for safety and smooth travel. There are no services, so plan accordingly.
