Trail Overview
South Ambrose is an engaging 3.2-mile out-and-back trail designed for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking to escape into the scenic Sapphire Mountains of the Bitterroot National Forest. Branching off Ambrose Creek Road (Forest Development Road 428) onto Road 428A, this route climbs from an elevation of 4,852 feet up to 5,873 feet, offering a cumulative elevation gain of over 1,000 feet. The initial stretch of the trail is relatively narrow, winding through the timber with a series of twists, turns, dips, and mild ruts. As the trail advances, drivers will navigate tight corners and negotiate several decent-sized potholes that require careful wheel placement.
Beyond the prominent Y-junction, the technical challenge increases slightly with deeper dugouts, rocky sections, and a handful of sharp switchbacks. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes are well-suited for these tighter maneuvers and uneven terrain, which earns the trail a technical rating of 3. Seasonally accessible from late spring through late fall depending on mountain snowpack, the route culminates at a small mountain camping spot that offers a pleasant view through the trees and surprisingly strong cellular service. A natural spring is located near this end point, providing a scenic backdrop to relax before making the return journey down the mountain.
