Middle Ambrose

Middle Ambrose is a scenic off-road trail ideal for ATV, SxS, and dirt bike enthusiasts looking to explore the rugged Sapphire Mountains of Montana. Branching off from the South Ambrose Trail, this route spans approximately 3.3 miles and begins with an easy-going dirt path winding through dense forest, featuring fun turns and multiple dispersed camping sites. The trail climbs from an elevation of 5,458 feet to a peak of 5,905 feet, accumulating 467 feet of elevation gain along the way. As travelers venture deeper, they will encounter increasingly challenging terrain, including deep puddles, washouts, and minor obstacles where four-wheel-drive or high clearance is beneficial. About halfway through the trip, the trail reaches a sharp left-hand turn marked by a fire ring, where the path narrows significantly. Beyond this transition point, the route is restricted by tight clearances and is only wide enough for ATVs, SxSs, and motorcycles, making full-size vehicles highly discouraged due to the lack of turnaround space. This narrower segment features tall grasses that conceal large boulders, low-hanging branches, and tight tree gaps that require precise navigation. With a technical rating of 3, riders must also manage a few off-camber sections before reaching the end of the trail, which terminates at a small turnaround pile of dirt that can also serve as a primitive campsite. Cell service drops quickly, with two bars of LTE at the beginning of the trail fading to no service at all within the thick canopy.
