Trail Overview

Skyline Mine Spur is an ideal scenic connector for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking to explore the rugged heart of the Deerlodge National Forest. Spanning approximately 3.7 miles, this trail connects Elkhorn Road near Tacoma Gulch to the Skyline Mine Trail, climbing through dense pine forests to a high point of 6,511 feet. Along the route, drivers will navigate moderate elevation changes with 666 feet of climbing and 1,228 feet of descent, making it a thrilling yet accessible mountain traverse. The trail offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges, but travelers should remain alert for downed timber blocking the path. Due to its remote nature and forested terrain, carrying recovery equipment such as a saw, tow rope, and winch is highly recommended to clear fallen logs. The trail sits at a technical rating of 2, featuring a primarily dirt surface that is generally straightforward but can become extremely slick and muddy after heavy rains or during the early spring snowmelt. Wildlife is abundant in this region, with frequent sightings of deer, elk, and bears, so proper safety precautions are essential. Offroaders should plan ahead by packing extra fuel, plenty of water, and seasonal gear, especially when exploring during the prime summer and autumn months when the trail is most accessible.
