Riemel Trail / Hiking Trailhead is a scenic 3.9-mile point-to-point route near North Fork, Idaho, that offers high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs a short but thrilling drive into a pristine valley with secluded dispersed camping. This trail provides offroaders with direct access to beautiful mountain vistas, hiking trailheads, and the quiet backcountry of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Beginning at an elevation of 4,596 feet, the trail ascends 685 feet to a maximum elevation of 5,121 feet. The initial segment of the trail begins through private property, requiring drivers to stay strictly on the trail, before descending into the public lands of the valley. The trail demands careful driving due to a long, extremely narrow cliffside section that descends into the valley, characterized by deep ruts, zero room for oncoming vehicles to pass, and virtually no pullouts. Unpaved dirt and rock form the primary surface, which can become highly slick and challenging when wet or muddy. Because there is no winter maintenance, this route is best suited for travel from late spring through fall. Dispersed camping spots are located throughout the valley, at the end of the trail, and near the hiking trailhead, making it an excellent destination for an overnight backcountry stay.
