Trail Overview
This trail, FS 674, is designated for travel by vehicles less than or equal to 50 inches in width. It is closed to all motorized travel from October 15 through December 1. It is an 8-mile round-trip, in-and-out ATV and dirt bike route. The trail started out life many years ago as a logging road providing access to the middle reaches of the Overwhich Canyon. The trail roughly parallels the creek, but is perched high above it on the steep side of the mountain. Over the years, Mother Nature has launched rock falls and slides on the road, washed out plugged culverts along with the road, and plagued the road with deadfall and vigorous growths of vegetation. The Forest Service has responded to these rude events by re-routing an ATV trail around the damage and clearing the deadfall and vegetation to ATV trail specifications. The net result is a route that feels very much like a constructed ATV trail with at least four challenging stream crossings and several narrow rocky transits on rock falls. There are several level segments that provide a breather to the more exciting characteristics of this trail. Because this trail lies on a north-facing slope, the mixed conifer vegetation is quite vigorous and varied. The trail ends at the creek where the beavers are busily building a dam and laying in willows for the winter. A nice ride through very rugged terrain, awesome scenery, moderate technical challenges, several wildlife sightings, and a whole lot of solitude. Be sure to take your chainsaw!!
