Trail Overview

Miller Mountain Road is a 1 lane dirt shelf road ascending through a sparse residential area above Cooke City, WY. The road is only somewhat maintained with potholes and loose rock, but the views of the town below and the surrounding mountains in the Gallatin National Forest are beautiful! A creek crossing and dispersed camping are at the intersection of Daisy Pass.

I don’t know who the joker was that called this a “three”. It is a 4.5. I sliced a sidewall driving on the connector Road on the north end, this intersection was just to the north of me and it was rated green, so I took it for an easy road back to town. It was anything but. It is not easily handled by a full-size vehicle. There is a house in the middle of trail, so I thought the lower part would be better. It was a little, but not much. The northerly half is narrow, has sections with fallen trees that narrow the road, even more, lots of jagged rock, some rock ledge, and other nastiness. It made for an exciting adventure, but I was not looking for that at that point in my trip.

We descended the trail in a Ram power wagon with a four wheel camper. We kept the truck in low 4, 1st gear and sway bars disconnected to keep the descent slow and controlled. While it was wide enough though the trees there were some logs to work around so be prepared with a saw. Definitely lots of steep technical sections of ruts, loose rocks, and boulders that had us second guessing our decision to take a short cut into cooke city. We were fortunate enough not to encounter anyone coming up the trail, as there are minimal opportunities to pull aside or turn around in a bigger 4x4. For a jeep, maybe a 4 out of 10. For a bigger 4x4, 5 out of 10 coz of side clearance. Would recommend coming down trail due to the steep loose rocks. And as a bonus you can treat yourself to ice cream as you are airing up.
