Trail Overview
Lulu Pass is a scenic and historic mountain trail near Cooke City, Montana, perfect for intermediate four-wheel-drive enthusiasts seeking a mix of high-alpine views and historical mining relics. Spanning approximately 3 miles with an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet, the route begins near Fisher Creek at about 8,800 feet and steadily climbs to its high point near 9,830 feet. The first portion of the road is a somewhat maintained, two-lane forest service road that winds past an old, abandoned mining community, offering offroaders a glimpse into the region's rich mining heritage.
As the trail advances toward Sheep Pass, the terrain transitions into a more challenging single-lane route characterized by steep climbs, loose gravel, and v-notch washes that demand careful tire placement. Drivers will need a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or SxS to navigate these rougher, unpaved sections safely. The route culminates at Scotch Bonnet Road near an overlook area, where spectacular vistas of Henderson Mountain, Fisher Mountain, and Scotch Bonnet Mountain await. Due to its high elevation, the trail is typically accessible only during the summer and early fall months when snow has cleared.
