Trail Overview

Starting off, this ride seems straightforward; two vehicles can easily pass one another. Taking a left when you reach Magpie Ridges leads to some nice obstacles. You'll continue to climb, rolling over rock gardens along the way when you reach a steep section. Make sure E-Brake works if you want to get out and take photos. You'll reach a 4-way intersection at the top, take a right on Avalanche Creek, to return to Hwy 284. Great campsites along the way. Look for a couple of water crossings to access campsites.

Difficulty

Two vehicle width early on. Magpie Ridge is where you'll start to have clearance over various rock gardens. Very steep section before connecting to Magpie Road again.

The only difficult portion is the northern section past where it intersects with magpie gulch road. We went down a little ways and got tired of climbing over so many small rocks. I wouldn’t say it was very challenging but definitely slow going and I would recommend airing down your tires more for that section. It was also getting late in the day and we wanted to set up camp before it got too dark so we turned around and took the magpie gulch road. The rest of the route is tame definitely doable in a stock suv/crossover. And watch out for cows on the east leg

So this trail had to be split into two days for me. Day 1 I entered via Avalanche Gulch road and made it halfway through before I high centered myself and got stuck on a hard to see snow drift, the drift can be easily bypassed so don’t get stuck like me. After I dug myself out it was close to dark and I went home. Aside from the snow drift, that entire half of the trail was very tame and was a 2-3 difficulty rating. I came back the next day and entered through the other side on Magpie Gulch road, once again it was a very tame ride until I got to the fork between the magpie creek to avalanche creek trail and the magpie gulch trail. I continued on the blue trail and it turned into a 5 difficulty rating (very rocky, rutted, off camber, steep, and slow going) for the duration of the way until the magpie gulch trail connected back again. Once that happened the difficulty went back to a 2-3 rating.

extremely mild if you stay on the blue route. We did this so that we could scout some better areas. if you follow the blue route you won't need 4wd but in one spot thats a very steep rocky hill. so I had to use 4wd once on the entire trip. a little disappointing if I'm being honest. definitely not a 4/10 like the app suggested. maybe a 3 but more like a 2. any Honda pilot can do this if they go slow and follow the path.

Made it to about 6300 feet and turned around because of snow. Came in on the Magpie side. Until that elevation, trail was clear and running great.
