Trail Overview

Nelson Road offers a scenic and highly accessible offroad driving experience near Helena, Montana, making it perfect for beginners, families, and anyone hoping to spot local wildlife in a healthy, well-maintained forest. Spanning approximately 5.7 miles, this route climbs from an elevation of 3,983 feet near York Road up to 4,697 feet where it connects with the Favorite Gulch and Owl Gulch Loop Trail. Along the journey, drivers will experience a total elevation gain of 1,141 feet, winding through lush timberlands that are home to deer, elk, moose, and black bears. The trail is rated easy, making it highly suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, stock SUVs, and SxSs looking for a relaxed dirt-road cruise with spectacular mountain views. While the primary surface consists of dirt and gravel, track conditions are highly dependent on seasonal weather. Early spring brings lingering snow and muddy ruts, and heavy summer rainstorms can quickly turn the path slick and soft, requiring cautious driving. Because the route traverses remote forested areas, encountering downed timber is common, making it wise to pack a chainsaw, tow straps, a snatch block, and standard recovery gear. Visitors should also carry extra fuel, plenty of water, and snacks, while ensuring they stay strictly on the designated trail to respect the private property easements that allow public access along this public right-of-way.
