Trail Overview
Over the eons, the Big Sheep Creek cut a canyon through the Tendoy mountains. The road faithfully follows the creek, so the traveler is treated to a ride through a very steep canyon and an awesome display of rock formations. There is a resident herd of Bighorn Sheep and a swallow cave that are fun to watch. It is also likely to see deer, coyotes, and a variety of raptors. Much of the canyon is on BLM land, and they have provided abundant access to the creek, which makes it a desirable destination for fishing. There is also at least one organized BLM campground and several dispersed campsites for those who want to take their time visiting this extraordinary place. The Big Sheep Creek Road is a National Backcountry Byway, and it is a well-deserved designation. The road itself is a well-maintained two-lane gravel road and offers virtually no challenges to travelers.
