Trail Overview

This narrow, easy climb heads from the Bitterroot valley into the sapphire mountains. It begins in a residential area and then hits loose, steep switchbacks to begin the ascent. The trail gets relatively narrow in parts and has many low branches. Be aware of some rockslide areas and frequent slides causing the trail to be off-camber. Once near the top, it becomes a maze of old logging roads with locked gates. Be aware of the steep drop-off as much of this trail is shelf road. There didn't appear to be any camping spots unless you decide to camp in front of one of the locked gates, which seems to be an option based on the fire rings here and there. The views from the 8mile saddle are incredible. Link up with Sluce creek for a nice loop up and back down the mounting with epic views. There is no cell service in the valley, and full LTE at the top.

Road is currently dry with a few potholes and loose rock. Brush is creeping in along the sides, surface is rough in spots due to larger gravel, airing down is suggested for a better ride.

Deep snow just past the Y. I’d say about 3 weeks and the trail should be much better.
