Trail Overview
Delta NF, Sunflower WMA Access Road is a flat, four-mile dirt levee road designed for drivers of any experience level looking for a direct route into the heart of the Delta National Forest. Running along the top of a levee just north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, this beginner-friendly path sits at an elevation of roughly 94 to 100 feet with virtually zero elevation change. It serves as a primary access corridor for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and high-clearance rigs looking to venture deeper into the forest's extensive public lands. The trail begins off US Highway 61 and transitions from a paved highway into a flat, dirt route that is highly straightforward to navigate during dry conditions.
While the road is generally rated easy, the dirt and clay surface can quickly turn into a slick, nearly impassable muddy mess during heavy rains, requiring careful planning and appropriate tires. This access road leads towards numerous campgrounds, trailheads, and dispersed recreation opportunities, but visitors should be mindful of seasonal hunting traffic as the surrounding wildlife management area is highly active. Traveling along this scenic delta corridor offers a direct gateway to some of the region's best outdoor recreation, provided drivers monitor local weather and watch for rapidly changing trail conditions.
