Trail Overview

This trail is designed for experienced drivers and well-built vehicles, offering some of the most technical terrain in the area. Throughout the route, you'll encounter large boulders, deep holes, and uneven surfaces that demand precise tire placement and constant focus. Misjudging a line can easily lead to high-centering or getting stuck in a tricky spot. One of the key challenges here is the limited availability of natural winch points; trees with the right diameter needed to safely recover are sparse. In the event of a recovery, you may need to get creative by wrapping a strap around a large rock or navigating slightly off-trail to reach a secure anchor. This trail is unforgiving and requires both the right gear and smart decision-making to complete successfully.

Difficulty

This is a highly advanced trail suited only for experienced drivers and fully outfitted rigs. Large rocks, deep voids, and uneven terrain make this a slow, technical crawl that demands sharp focus and precise vehicle control. Tire placement is everything--pick the wrong line, and you risk getting stuck or doing damage. To make things more complicated, winch points are few and far between. Recovery may require out-of-the-box thinking. This is not a casual ride; it's a serious challenge that pushes both driver and machine.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
