Trail Overview
This trail presents a moderate level of difficulty and is a solid choice for drivers with some off-road experience and vehicles equipped for uneven terrain. The surface includes a mix of dirt and rock, with several off-camber sections that require careful tire placement and throttle control--particularly after rain or in slick conditions. Along the way, you'll encounter rock obstacles up to 2 feet tall, which can challenge ground clearance and test your suspension. At one end of the trail lies a relatively steep hill climb on loose rock. While manageable in dry conditions, it can become significantly more challenging when wet, requiring momentum and smart line selection. This trail is a step up from beginner routes and offers a fun challenge without crossing into extreme territory.

This is a mid-level trail that blends moderate technical features with a few spots requiring solid driver focus. Off-camber sections and embedded rocks up to 18 inches mean it's not a casual cruise, but still doable for rigs with decent clearance and a bit of driver experience. One end includes a hill climb on loose rock that's manageable in dry conditions but gets noticeably more challenging when wet--traction and line choice matter here. While not extreme, this trail sits comfortably above beginner level and gives drivers a good opportunity to test their skills without diving into full-on rock crawling.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
