Trail Overview
This one-way trail is run from the top down and offers a moderate challenge with two distinct lines. Beginning with a partial rock garden that gives drivers two main line options. One side is milder, with fewer obstacles, though you'll still encounter rocks up to 2 feet tall that require attention to tire placement. The other line is more technical, taking you through a true rock garden where ground clearance is critical. Undercarriage protection like skid plates and rock sliders is highly recommended, especially for the tougher line. The trail finishes with a steep hill climb. At the top, you'll spot a quirky statue made from old car parts, likely from rigs that didn't make it through unscathed.
Difficulty
This moderately difficult trail offers two main lines: one with manageable rocks up to 2 feet tall, and another that's a true rock garden requiring armor like skid plates and sliders. The end features a steep climb, and a welded statue made of old car parts hints at past trail carnage. Choose your line wisely.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
