Trail Overview
This trail offers multiple route options, including bypasses around the more challenging obstacles, making it accessible for a range of off-road rigs. If you decide to take the main line instead of the bypass, be prepared to enter a rock garden featuring boulders as tall as 3 feet. Tire placement becomes critical here, as poor line choice could result in getting hung up or causing vehicle damage. It's a solid test of both articulation and traction. Even the bypass isn't exactly easy, it has deep mud holes with hidden rocks up to a foot tall. Take it slow and stay alert.
Difficulty
he main route includes rock obstacles up to 3 feet tall, requiring precise tire placement and good flex. The bypass avoids the biggest rocks but still has deep mud holes with hidden rocks up to 1 foot tall. Even the easier path demands caution. Under carriage protections such as skid plates and rock sliders along recovery gear are recommended.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
