Trail Overview
This trail features a steep hill climb with two distinct levels of difficulty. The lower section is slightly less steep but littered with larger loose rocks that can make traction unpredictable and require careful throttle control. As you progress to the upper level, the grade increases, and the surface becomes mostly smaller, loose rocks that tend to shift under your tires, further complicating grip. Near the top of the trail, you'll only have about 20 feet of space to make a sharp left or right turn. Because of this limited turnaround zone, it's critical not to charge full speed up the hill.
Difficulty
This hill climb offers two levels of difficulty. The lower section has larger loose rocks but is less steep. The upper section is steeper with smaller shifting rocks that reduce traction. At the top, you'll have about 20 feet to turn left or right, so avoid charging blindly to the end.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
