Trail Overview
This trail presents a moderate challenge with a mix of larger rocks and scattered boulders, some reaching up to two feet in height. The terrain requires steady line selection and vehicle control, especially through several off-camber sections and tight, winding turns. Near one end of the trail, you'll encounter a short but steep hill climb that becomes significantly more difficult when wet. Exposed tree roots along this climb can cause your vehicle to bounce and shift, increasing the chance of body contact with surrounding trees, so caution is advised. While passable by capable rigs, the potential for damage rises in slick conditions. Due to the layout and flow, this trail is generally better run in the direction from Leprechaun Lanes toward Sauna Rocks, as the descent feels more manageable versus the other direction. It's a solid trail for experienced drivers looking for a mix of rock and technical terrain.
Difficulty
This is a moderately difficult trail with enough technical features to keep even experienced drivers alert. Boulders up to two feet tall and rocky patches require good clearance and smart line choice. Tight turns and off-camber sections add complexity, especially for longer rigs. A short, steep hill climb near one end becomes tricky when wet; tree roots can unsettle your rig, increasing the chance of sliding or body contact with nearby trees. While not extreme, this trail isn't a casual cruise.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
