Trail Overview
This trail is a dedicated rock garden that provides a solid challenge for off-roaders looking to test their vehicle's capability. Throughout the route, you'll encounter numerous rock obstacles, some reaching up to 3 feet in height, which require careful tire placement and good ground clearance. Drivers in lower-clearance rigs should proceed with extreme caution or ensure they have adequate protection like rock sliders, skid plates, and differential guards to prevent undercarriage damage. While the trail demands attention and control, it does feature a few entry and exit points along the way, allowing you to either bail early or jump in for just a section of it.
Difficulty
This trail features continuous rock obstacles, some up to three feet tall, requiring high ground clearance and careful tire placement. Undercarriage protection is strongly recommended. Multiple access points offer some flexibility, but the terrain is best suited for experienced drivers with well-equipped rigs.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
