Trail Overview
This trail is a one-way directional route, so it's important to enter and follow it from the correct access point. Right at the entrance, there's a sign warning drivers about the trail's deep ruts, and for good reason. Throughout the trail, you'll encounter long stretches of heavily rutted terrain and large mud holes. In several sections, water depths have been known to exceed 40 inches, especially after significant rainfall. While the trail doesn't contain any major rock or technical obstacles, the deep ruts and unpredictable mud make it a serious challenge for vehicles without high ground clearance, waterproofing, or proper recovery gear.
Difficulty
This directional trail poses serious challenges due to extremely deep ruts and standing water that can exceed 40 inches in spots. There are no rock obstacles, but the depth of the mud and ruts can overwhelm unprepared vehicles. High ground clearance is a must, and it's strongly recommended to have your differential, transmission, and transfer case breathers routed to higher positions to avoid water intrusion. Recovery gear is also advised, as getting stuck is a real possibility. The trail demands caution, especially after rain when water levels are at their worst.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
