Trail Overview

This trail is a paved road and is one of the most scenic routes in the Beltrami Island National Forest. It is wide enough for two vehicles and has a well-maintained gravel surface. The drive passes through picturesque farmland, including a honey farm, and features views of grazing cattle, rolling grassy fields, and open green landscapes. The route winds in a gentle zigzag, adding variety to the otherwise rural setting. Near the end, the trail crosses a small creek before continuing toward the Wapiti Wildlife Management Area. It also connects to Moose River Forest Road, a nine-mile-long two-track route. Drivers should be aware of the possibility of slippery surfaces and watch for local traffic. The trail does not provide any dispersed or formal campsites, and there are no amenities such as trash disposal or a water supply. Cell service may be limited along parts of the route, so preparation is recommended.

Difficulty

The trail is maintained but can develop light overgrowth between trims, especially in the summer months. Commonly used by local OHV traffic, the path remains visible and passable, though branches and low brush may occasionally encroach.

History

The Wapiti WMA is part of the broader Beltrami Island State Forest, characterized by its diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and peat bogs. These habitats support a variety of wildlife species, including elk (also known as wapiti), which are native to the area. The presence of elk is significant, as they were historically abundant in Minnesota but were extirpated from the state in the late 1800s.
