Trail Overview
This trail presents a mix of moderate challenges suited for off-roaders with some experience. Scattered throughout the route are rock boulders up to a foot tall that require basic tire placement skills to climb over without issue. Several steep hill climbs are also part of the terrain, many of which have loose rock surfaces that can significantly reduce traction--especially after rainfall. One particular section near Devil's Staircase features a steep incline with an off-camber turn that demands extra caution, as the angle can cause a loss of balance if approached too quickly or carelessly. Proper throttle control, good tires, and a confident driver are key to making it through this trail without difficulty. It's important to note that signage at both ends references Upper Money Talks and Devil's Staircase to guide direction, but this is a separate trail.
Difficulty
This trail includes loose rock, short but steep climbs, and an off-camber turn near Devil's Staircase that requires attention. Boulders up to a foot tall are scattered throughout, needing basic tire placement. While not highly technical, traction can be limited, especially when wet.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
