Trail Overview

This trail is a narrow, single-vehicle route that runs smoothly in most sections, though occasional bumps are present along the way. The surface alternates between gravel and sand, and the track winds through a scenic forest with a mix of ascents and descents. A few side trails branch off from the main route, but they are limited to cycling or walking, and the overall path maintains a straightforward course. Fallen trees are common and may block progress, requiring clearance to continue. Drainage ditches run beside parts of the trail, which can make maneuvering more difficult. Because of its narrow width and limited pull-off areas, turning around can be challenging, particularly for larger vehicles. Unlike other routes in the area, there are no residences along this trail, which adds to its remote character. The trail does not provide dispersed or formal camping options and lacks amenities such as water access or trash disposal. Cell service may also be unreliable in places.

History

The Migizi Trail is a 19-mile paved loop in the Chippewa National Forest, circling Pike Bay near Cass Lake, Minnesota. The Ojibwe word “migizi” means “bald eagle,” and fittingly, the area boasts sightings of these majestic birds, along with herons and pelicans.
